Carrie Powell

Carrie Powell, LAT, ATC, EMT-P, is a licensed and certified athletic trainer. Carrie earned her B.S. from Lenoir-Rhyne College, and her second B.S. in Emergency Medicine from Western Carolina. Carrie is currently the Athletic Trainer at Swain County High School.

Prior to coming to HOSM  & Swain HS in 2003, Carrie served several years as the Assistant Athletic Trainer for Collegiate Men’s soccer, Football, Men's basketball, Women’s softball, and Volleyball. Carrie had also worked several years as the Head Athletic Trainer for two High Schools in Hickory via a local orthopedic group. 

Besides being a certified athletic trainer, Carrie has a  rare and extremely valuable background as an  Emergency Medicine/Paramedic. She is heavily involved with Swain County Schools' AED and EpiPen/Anaphylaxis program and Swain County Safe Schools'. 

Carrie also helps coordinate the school sports physicals, football coverage for SCHS and team physicians. She is an NCHSAA certified NWCA OPC – Assessor for wresting. Carrie also holds a deep and vast orthopedic/sports medicine background of almost 20 years. Carrie has a strong interest in concussions and a deeply rooted background with ImPACT Testing, serving as our ImPACT system manager. 

Emily Mitzel

Emily Mitzel, MS, LAT, ATC, is a licensed and certified athletic trainer. Emily earned a Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training from the State University of New York at Cortland. Emily Also completed a Master's of Science in Sport Psychology from University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She worked with several teams as an athletic training student. Emily has also worked with the baseball and Men's soccer teams at Greensboro College. Emily was also an assistant athletic trainer at Western Carolina University working with the women's volleyball and softball teams. She has served as an approved clinical instructor for Western's athletic training education program. Emily will be assisting with game coverage in addition to her role as a physician extender.


Jonathan Mitzel

Jonathan Mitzel, MS, LAT, ATC, is a state licensed certified athletic trainer. Jonathan earned a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Athletic Training from SUNY Brockport in Brockport, NY. Jonathan also completed a Master's of Science in Athletic Training from West Virginia University. Prior to coming to Carolina West Jonathan served as Athletic Trainer to WCU's men's and women's cross country and track and field programs.  He has been the Athletic Trainer at Cherokee High School since 2009 and serves as a preceptor the WCU’s Athletic Training Education Program.




Anne Smallwood

Anne Smallwood, MS, LAT, ATC is a licensed and certified athletic trainer. Anne earned her Bachelors Degree in Athletic Training, with a concentration in Health Promotion from Appalachian State University and her Masters Degree in Sports Administration from the University of New Mexico. Anne has worked at the collegiate level for the past eight years, and is currently the Athletic Trainer at Robbinsville High School.





Jerry Sullivan

Jerry Sullivan, LAT, ATC is a licensed and certified athletic trainer. Jerry earned his Bachelor's of Science in Health Science/Athletic Training from Western Illinois University. He has spent the last 13 years as the head athletic trainer for Lincolnland Community College in Springfield, Illinois, and prior to that was the head athletic trainer for Mineral Area College in Park Hills, Missouri. In 1995, Jerry was selected by the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games to work as an athletic trainer for the track and field venue for the 100th Olympic Games held in Atlanta, Ga. During this time, he was selected to work the 1995 US Rowing National Championships,1996 Atlanta Grand Prix Invitational Track Event and the 1996 US Track & Field Trials. Jerry was also the medical liaison for DeKalb Medical Center for the 1994 and 1995 Peach Bowl. Jerry is currently the head athletic trainer for Blue Ridge Early College.


Tom Tisdale

Tom Tisdale, MS, LAT, ATC is a licensed and certified athletic trainer. Tom received his Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training from California Lutheran University. He completed his Master's Degree in Performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention from California University of Pennsylvania. He spent 19 years working in professional baseball with the Texas Rangers, Tampa Bay Rays and Pittsburgh Pirates. During the baseball off seasons he has worked with Salisbury University in Maryland as well as Western Carolina University. From 2006 through 2010 he served as the Men's Basketball athletic trainer at WCU. Currently, Tom serves as the athletic trainer at Rabun County High School and is an approved clinical instructor for the Western Carolina University Athletic Training Education Program.


Angie Arndt

Angie Arndt MSEd, LAT, ATC is a licensed and certified athletic trainer. Angie earned a B.S. in Athletic Training from Western Carolina University and a Master's of Science in Health Education and Health Promotion with a concentration in Sports Medicine from Virginia Tech. She has covered a variety of collegiate sports, including softball and track and field, and most recently worked for two years as the athletic trainer for Virginia Tech's women's lacrosse team. Angie is a Clinical Instructor for WCU's Athletic Training Education Program. She is also an adjunct faculty member in the Health Sciences Department at WCU. She is currently covering Smoky Mountain High School.




Bob Grimes

Bob Grimes, LAT, ATC is a licensed and certified athletic trainer. Bob earned a BA in Education from Central Washington University. He worked many  years in professional baseball, including 28 years in the Chicago Cubs organization. He joined Harris Ortho and Sports Med in 2013 and is providing athletic training outreach at Murphy High School.








Jay Reno

Jay Reno, LAT, ATC is a licensed and certified athletic trainer. He is a graduate of Western Carolina University where he majored athletic training. He is providing outreach to Andrews High School.









Britton Harper

Britton Harper, LAT, ATC is a licensed and certified athletic trainer. He graduated from Western Carolina University, majoring in athletic training. He received his master's degree from University of South Carolina. He is providing outreach at Hayesville High School.
